About Us
Soundview Association, a private non-profit
corporation, was established to offer a small, group home
environment for severely physically and developmentally
challenged young adults. The agency was founded in 1986
as a model project for the State of Washington, demonstrating
that these individuals could successfully be served in
their home communities, rather than in nursing homes and
institutions. Funds from pivate donations a well as Federal
and State grants, such as the Snohomish County Block Grant
and the Washingon State Housing Trust Fund were used to
purchase this first home in Stanwood, Washington.
During the agency's initial evaluation, the quality of Soundview's program
was found to be so exemplary that DSHS requested that we expand our services
to support communities in Skagit county. |

In June of 1990, the agency created
an Intensive Tenant Support program for five local
individuals, providing them 24-hour care and supervision.
These five residents pooled their resources to rent a home
in Mount Vernon. In 1992, Soundview and its Skagit residents
purchased a home of their own, thereby removing the pressures
from renting from an unaffilaited property owner, and lessening
their need for financial subsidy. The Feiger House, located
near Skagit Valley Hospital, is now recognized as a Supported
Living Program. The supported Living model provides funding
for people to live within their own community, unfortunately
though, it does not provide funding for the place in which
they live. Soundview relies heavily on community support
and private donations to enhance and maintain the fieger
House.
In both homes, soundview has created a warm, caring atmosphere that is responsive
to a person's needs. Residents have a sense of power over their circumstances,
make choices in their personal affairs, and develop their own relationships.
Daily pursuits emphasize independent living skills and developmental growth.
All residents maintain a regular community life; they hold jobs, go shopping,
get exercise if they choose, and pursue their individual interests. Physicians
in the local area meet residents' routine medical needs, and 24 hour agency staff
support is provided to those who may be hospitalized, or need special care. Public
advocacy is also an essential part of the commitment; most of the people served
by Soundview are non-verbal, and require the assistance of knowledgeable caregivers
to represent their interests.
Soundview's success has shown that even individuals with severe disabilities
can take their rightful place in the community; to live with dignity, privacy,
and share in the richness of community life. The donations made to Soundview
through various fundraisers over the years have shown the generous and caring
attitude of families, friends, and the general public |
